Volunteer Handbook

Welcome to Orenco Elementary School!

It is exciting to be a part of such an amazing school. The Booster Club is comprised of parents, teachers, staff and family members of Orenco Elementary students.  If you have a child at Orenco, you are automatically a member!  We come together to ensure that each and every child has an enriching school experience by providing activities, events, and programs that built strong relationships among students, staff, and families.  Participation from all of us is the key to our school’s success!  Without support from our many volunteers, none of the amazing things that we are able to do for our school would be possible.

Many wonderful volunteer opportunities exist at Orenco Elementary.  Our strong volunteer base and fundraising efforts are so important to out children’s education, especially during these difficult economic times.

This handbook is an outline of the many ways that you can get involved and help students and staff at Orenco Elementary.  Please take the time to explore the countless opportunities available at the school, such as working with students in the classroom, teaching art literacy, reading with students, library assistance, planning events and fundraising.  There is truly something for everyone, no matter what your time commitment and availability are.  Any amount of volunteer time is rewarding and greatly appreciated by the students and staff.

Thank you in advance for your support.  We welcome any ideas for new activities and programs at the school.  Please attend our next meeting or contact us if you have any questions, comments, or would like to get involved.

All Booster Club volunteers are required to follow the procedures set forth by the Hillsboro School District prior to volunteering by completing the online application found at

Feel free to contact us and stay up to date on our activities using the links below.

Art Literacy

The Art Literacy program helps bring art into the classroom through hands on projects based on significant artists and artistic styles.  There are three separate sessions throughout the year (Sept/Oct, Jan/Feb, and March/April) and each classroom will need a minimum of 2 volunteers per session.  Each lesson combines an introduction of the artist followed by a hands-on project.  This study of famous artists and styles helps students think more creatively, make observations, connect to history and cultural traditions, and better communicate ideas and emotions.  Art Lit volunteers work in their child’s classroom and coordinate with teachers to find a date/time that works with their own schedule.  Volunteer trainings are provided before each project and all materials and lesson plans are provided.  Each project is designed to take approximately 1 hour of classroom time and no more than 30 minutes of prep time.

Approximate Time Commitment per project:

  • 1 hour training (set time)
  • 90 minute prep/project (flexible during school hours)
  • Sign up with your teacher or contact Erin Stafford at

Box Tops

There are two ways to help collect funds for our school on products that you already purchase.  Traditional box top labels found on participating products will be phased out over the next few years, but can still be submitted as long as they are not expired.  Just cut out box tops on participating products, glue them to the collection sheet and turn them in to your teacher.  You can now download the new and improved, user-friendly Box Tops app, register and select Orenco Elementary, and then scan an eligible receipt containing Box Tops products.  You’ll earn 10 cents for each Box Tops product purchased.  The app will automatically add Box Tops to Orenco’s earnings online, allowing you to see how you are supporting your school in real-time.

We also need volunteers to coordinate this program.  Box Top Coordinators organize and submit physical box tops twice per year.   They are also responsible for encouraging and keeping track of classroom participation using various prizes and incentives.
